What goes into a storm report
- Hail — with the measured or estimated size in inches (see the hail size chart).
- Damaging wind — measured gusts or damage such as downed trees and power lines.
- Tornado — sightings and damage; tornadoes are rated on the EF scale after a survey.
Reports come from trained spotters, emergency managers, law enforcement and the public. The daily logs are preliminary: the same storm can generate several reports, and entries are corrected when NOAA publishes its final database.

What is a storm report?
A local storm report is an observation of severe weather — hail, damaging wind or a tornado — sent to the National Weather Service by trained spotters, emergency managers, law enforcement or the public, and collected by the Storm Prediction Center.
What time period does a storm report day cover?
The Storm Prediction Center organises reports from 1200 UTC to 1159 UTC the next day, so an evening storm in the US counts toward the same report day as that afternoon.
Are storm reports final?
No. The Storm Prediction Center says all daily reports are preliminary. They are later checked and published in its final severe-weather database, and several reports can describe the same storm.
