About Lightning Tracker & our data

lightningtrackerapp.com is the storm tracker site of Lightning Tracker, an iPhone app by Brite Technologies LLC.

Where the numbers come from

• Storm reports — NOAA Storm Prediction Center: the final severe-weather database for 2016–2025 and preliminary daily local storm reports after that. A report is a hail, damaging-wind or tornado observation from spotters, emergency managers, the public or NWS surveys. Several reports can describe one storm.
• Live alerts — the National Weather Service public API (api.weather.gov), loaded in your browser.
• 48-hour outlook — Open-Meteo weather models: forecast thunderstorm weather codes and convective instability (CAPE).
• Cities — GeoNames (CC BY 4.0). A city page counts reports within 25 miles of the city centre.

What we don't show

We do not publish lightning strike counts: no free public dataset provides them at city level. Always follow official NWS warnings and local authorities.
